Understanding take-home pay
Gross vs net salary: what is take-home pay?
Understand the difference between your salary, your take-home estimate and the cash left after saving.
Raises and job offers
A 10% increase in gross salary does not promise a 10% increase in take-home. Calculate the old and new salary under the same assumptions, then compare the net amounts. Their percentage change is measured against the original take-home, not the original gross salary.
Canada · Ontario example · 2026
In our Ontario 2026 example, CA$60,000 becomes CA$66,000: a CA$6,000 annual gross increase. The table shows the two engine estimates and the additional annual take-home. Both scenarios use basic claims and no voluntary contributions or other deductions.
This is a full-year comparison. If the raise starts during the year, the salary actually earned that year and the withholding schedule differ. An annual monthly equivalent also does not guarantee each monthly deposit.
CA$3,859.21 more annual take-home
| Measure | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | CA$60,000.00 | CA$66,000.00 |
| Take-home | CA$47,339.75 | CA$51,198.96 |
| Gross increase | — | 10.0% |
| Take-home increase | — | 8.2% |
The extra CA$6,000 includes CA$2,140.79 of additional modeled tax and payroll deductions.

A relative percentage change describes how much the new net amount grows compared with the old net amount. A percentage-point difference compares two rates directly. Neither should be substituted for the dollar increase.
For example, a change in keep rate is a comparison of rates, while a change in take-home is a comparison of cash amounts. You can receive more take-home while keeping a smaller share of total salary. Always name the amount or rate you are comparing.
Under progressive brackets, only the income portion in a higher band uses that band’s rate. Other modeled adjustments and contribution limits can affect the result, so the salary percentage alone cannot identify the net increase.
Use the same region, tax period and contributions on both sides when isolating a raise. Changing those inputs at the same time creates a different comparison. A pension contribution tied to salary may also change with a real offer, even though this example holds voluntary contributions at zero.

Check the annual take-home increase, then decide how much could support spending, debt payments or savings. Confirm benefits, hours, commuting costs and the effective date with the employer. Keep unknown offer details visible rather than treating them as zero.
Explore a raise supports the salary comparison. The Job Offer Planner can organize the broader decision, with its existing access requirements. An estimate is a planning input, not an instruction to accept an offer.
