Understanding take-home pay
Gross vs net salary: what is take-home pay?
Understand the difference between your salary, your take-home estimate and the cash left after saving.
Contributions and budgeting
A deductible RRSP contribution can reduce taxable income. A TFSA contribution does not create an income-tax deduction. TaxCalcy therefore treats the entered RRSP contribution within the Canadian calculation and shows TFSA saving after tax. Both can reduce cash available for current spending.

An RRSP contribution is money set aside, not extra spendable income. Tax relief can offset part of its current cash cost, but it does not make the contribution free. RRSP payments are generally taxable when received; this salary model is not a retirement withdrawal projection.
TFSA saving uses money after tax. Eligible investment income and withdrawals are generally tax-free, subject to the account’s rules. That future treatment does not turn the current contribution into a salary deduction.

The table compares the Ontario 2026 baseline at CA$60,000 with either a CA$3,000 RRSP contribution or CA$3,000 TFSA saving. The RRSP case assumes CA$3,000 of entered deduction room and a contribution deductible in the modeled period. The TFSA case assumes the saver independently confirmed sufficient room.
Look at income tax, take-home and cash available after savings as separate rows. The comparison holds every other input constant. It illustrates the model’s treatment; it does not recommend one account or verify the reader’s eligibility.
| Measure | No saving | CA$3,000 RRSP | CA$3,000 TFSA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Income tax | CA$8,320.50 | CA$7,566.72 | CA$8,320.50 |
| Take-home | CA$47,339.75 | CA$45,093.53 | CA$47,339.75 |
| Available after savings | CA$47,339.75 | CA$45,093.53 | CA$44,339.75 |
The RRSP case reduces modeled income tax by CA$753.78. The TFSA case leaves modeled income tax unchanged.

Use your CRA information and your own records to confirm your available RRSP deduction limit and TFSA room. Contributions, withdrawals and transfers can make personal room different from a headline annual limit. Account records may require reconciliation with recent transactions.
Entering RRSP room in TaxCalcy is an assumption supplied by you, not a CRA verification. The TFSA field budgets a post-tax saving amount; it does not calculate available room. Do not use a successful estimate as permission to contribute.

A refund also depends on tax already paid and the rest of your return. The example compares annual modeled income tax; it does not predict refund timing or the employer’s withholding adjustment. Nor does it account for investment returns, fees or future withdrawal tax.
Enter only supported contributions that match your facts, inspect the results and keep a separate spending budget. For questions about deductible amounts or account eligibility, use current CRA guidance or qualified advice.
